Preparing Your Apartment Before Traveling

As exciting as traveling can be, leaving your apartment behind can often cause anxiety and stress. From security concerns to the fear of returning to a messy space, there’s a lot to consider. However, with some careful planning and preparation, you can ensure peace of mind while you’re away and return to a welcoming, organized home. We’re exploring ways to prepare your apartment before traveling.

Lock up your apartment

It’s important to properly secure your apartment against potential break-ins or accidents. Make sure all doors and windows are securely locked. If you have neighbors or friends nearby that you trust, inform them of your travel plans so they can keep an eye on your apartment.

Take care of mail and deliveries

A pile of unattended mail or packages is a clear indicator that no one is home. Arrange to have your mail held at the post office or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it for you. It’s very simple to postpone any deliveries until after you return home through UPS or USPS.

Inform the leasing office

If you’re going to be gone for an extended period, it may be a good idea to inform the leasing office. In case of an emergency situation, such as a fire or flood, it’s important for them to know you aren’t in your apartment.

Deep clean just before leaving

Cleaning your apartment before leaving for your vacation is essential for a stress-free return. There is nothing better than coming back to a clean, clutter-free home! Set aside some time to declutter, wipe down all surfaces, vacuum, mop, and change your sheets and towels.

Do a fridge clean out

It’s a good idea to do a full fridge clean-out sometime before you leave for your trip. Check expiration dates of items, specifically on dairy or produce products. If you think they will spoil while you are away, try to consume those items before you leave or toss them.

Take out all trash

Right before you leave for your trip, be sure to take out all of the trash in your apartment. This includes trash in your kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc. This prevents attracting any unwanted rodents or pests while you’re away and also prevents unpleasant smells.

Create a plan for your pets

If you have any pets, be sure to make appropriate arrangements for their care while you’re away. Whether it’s hiring a pet sitter, boarding them at a nearby facility, or asking a friend to look after them, it’s crucial that your furry friends are well taken care of while you’re away.

Minimize unnecessary utility expenses

To avoid unnecessary expenses, consider adjusting your utility settings before you leave. Turn down the thermostat to save energy, unplug electronic devices, and switch off lights and fans. If you’re going to be away for an extended period, it may be worth it to consider suspending non-essential services like internet or cable.

Notify those you trust

Inform a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor about your travel plans. Provide them with your contact information and itinerary so they can easily reach you in case of an emergency. If you have a spare key, it may be a good idea to give them one to check on your apartment periodically, such as to water any plants.

Conduct a final walkthrough before leaving

Before you walk out the door, do a final walkthrough of your apartment to ensure that everything has been properly cared for. Double-check that appliances are turned off, faucets are not leaking, food is not sitting out, etc. Be sure you don’t have wet clothes in the wash, or a dishwasher full of dirty dishes. This last-minute inspection can provide peace of mind and prevent any last-minute surprises!

Before you leave for your next vacation, follow these steps to ensure a seamless, worry-free trip. Safe travels!
