Moving Checklist

Are you scrambling to organize all of your things before moving out of your apartment? With a little planning and preparing, moving out will be a much simpler process. We’re created this guide to help ensure that you check off all of the boxes on your to-do list and pack all of your belongings securely.

Step One: Purchase the Packing Essentials

When packing belongings, especially fragile items, it is important to make sure you have a cushion to prevent breaking, scratching, or any other damages. Packing peanuts and foam wrap are two inexpensive options that are great for protecting glassware, dishes, frames, vases, or any other large or breakable items.

You can purchase boxes and packing tape in most office stores, such as Office Depot. Reusable boxes and containers can be found at a variety of stores like HomeGoods, The Container Store, Walmart, and more. Clip-on tops ensure that all belongings stay contained. Even though these are more expensive than cardboard boxes, if you have seasonal clothes and items, these serve as great year-round storage containers.

Step Two: Organize

This may seem self-explanatory, but organization is crucial while moving. Start with categorizing by room: living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and all other current spaces in your apartment. From there, organize into categories. For example, in the kitchen, try organizing the pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, and miscellaneous items. This will make packing a breeze!

Labeling also falls under organization. Who wants to unload boxes and containers out of a moving van without any labels or not knowing where to start? Tape and a Sharpie are all you need to label each box with the room and items within.

Step Three: Donate or Sell

It may be a good idea to get rid of those clothes in the back of your closet or those decorative pillows that went out of style months ago. Plato’s Closet is a popular way to sell clothes and make an extra buck or two. Facebook Marketplace allows Facebook users to sell and purchase clothes, furniture, accessories, decor, and so much more. Donating to thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army is a great way to give back to your community.

Step Four: A Final Walk-Through

Once all of the boxes and furniture are gone, be sure to walk through your old apartment one more time. This will be the last box to check off on your list. Start with the front door and work your way through your home. Make sure to clear out your home completely. This includes all food, shower curtains, wall decor, etc. Leaving a space completely cleaned out is not only polite, it will also help you avoid any fines.

Checking off these four steps will turn moving into a breeze! Keeping your belongings organized and filtering out the unneeded items will keep your new apartment clean and clutter-free.
